News and Reports for September 2014

Library Training for Faculty Research Assistants

The library will be offering two research training sessions for new faculty research assistants this fall. In this training, research assistants will learn about library services and policies and will gain an introduction to our databases and best research practices.

Williams Computer Learning Center

The sessions will be held at the following dates/times in the Computer Learning Center (CLC) in the Williams Law Library:

  • Thursday, September 25, 12:00pm-1:00pm
  • Tuesday, October 7, 3:00pm-4:00pm

Research assistants may sign up to attend the training here.

Any questions or requests for additional information may be sent to Morgan Stoddard, Research Services Librarian, mms237@law.georgetown.edu, 202-661-6598.

Online Access to Legislative and Executive Branch Materials

The Law Center’s ProQuest subscription now includes two new sets of content: Legislative Insight and Executive Branch Documents.

ProQuest’s Legislative Insight database compiles more than 18,000 histories covering enacted laws from 1929 to the present. These histories include photostatic PDF versions of the Public Law, all versions of enacted and related bills, Congressional Record excerpts, and committee hearings, reports, and documents. Template searching provides options for finding histories with Public Law numbers, Statute at Large citations, or bill numbers. It is a unparalleled resource for anyone performing comprehensive legislative history research.

ProQuest Congressional Legislative Insight

The Executive Branch Documents collection provides a complete annotated bibliography and full text of all Executive Branch Documents listed in the Checklist of Public Documents, 1789-1909, indexed by subjects, names, agency report numbers, and SuDocs Classification, as well as new documents from 1910-1932. The whole library of searchable PDFs can be accessed from the Advanced Search link on the ProQuest Congressional home page. ProQuest has created a comprehensive research guide about the Executive Branch Documents collection that is a great starting point for anyone using this database.

ProQuest Congressional Executive Documents

For questions about accessing and searching any of the ProQuest materials, please feel free to stop by the Reference Desk, or contact a Reference Librarian via chat or email (libref@law.georgetown.edu).

Fastcase now Incorporated in HeinOnline

Have you ever been reading a law review article on HeinOnline and wanted to look at a case cited within the article?

Fastcase on HeinOnline

You would have to call the case up on Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law or some other legal research system. Now, when researching within HeinOnline, you can retrieve cases using the Fastcase system which has been integrated into HeinOnline. As you can see, you simply need to enter a case citation:

Fastcase on HeinOnline

HeinOnline will then retrieve the case using the Fastcase system so that you can continue doing all research on HeinOnline and don’t have to move between that and another legal research system.

If you have any questions about using HeinOnline or Fastcase, please feel free to ask a reference librarian.

September Mobile App Recommendation

Welcome back!  Feeling overwhelmed? Perhaps you could use a good dose of caffeine…

My mobile app recommendation this month is the Starbucks app – and not just because it allows you to pay for their (in)famous brew with your phone.  Inside the Starbucks app is a message center where you can redeem offers for other apps and popular music singles.  You may have seen giveaway cards in Starbucks offering codes for free downloads: this is the same deal, but you never even have to visit the store, and the offers are available long after the original offer period.

Jill Smith

The Starbucks app is free for iPhone and Android.

If you would like to recommend additions to the library’s mobile apps database, please contact Jill Smith, Instructional Technology Librarian, at jas515@law.georgetown.edu or 202-662-9165.
