News and Reports for March 2016

Legal Essay Contest Catalog

For a few years, Richmond Law has been managing a Legal Essay Contest Catalog, which is a large collection of contest information for law students.  Recently they made some improvements and added a few new features.  New features include a list of recent additions, essay deadline filters, and an RSS feed.

If you would like to review it or refer students to it, it is here: http://law.richmond.edu/students/essay-catalog.html

Researching International Women's Rights

March 8 was International Women’s Day. The focus of this day has become one of a general celebration of respect and appreciation toward women for their social, political, and economic efforts, as well as a reminder that there is still a long way to go. In conjunction with this day, it is appropriate to highlight some of the women’s human rights resources available here at the Georgetown Law Library. The U.N. has several websites dedicated to women’s human rights, including WomenWatch, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, which is run through the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Each of these websites include reports on countries, statistics, multimedia and news clips about women in the world, and other official publications, such as treaties and resolutions concerning women’s rights.

Outside of the U.N., there are agencies like the Center for Reproductive Rights and International Women’s Rights Action Watch, that submit their own reports on countries to treaty committees (CEDAW and CESCR in particular), and offer resources on health education, domestic violence statistics and access to contraception for women around the world. Other helpful agencies include Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch

All of the resources mentioned above are free to users of the library as well as any person wanting to learn more about women’s rights. In addition to those free resources, we also have access to subscription databases that can be used for secondary source searching, namely for articles and commentary. Examples of these databases would include Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and Kluwer Law International Journals

These are just some of the resources available to Georgetown Law patrons interested in researching international women’s rights. If you need more information, librarians are available for consultation at the reference desk, via chat, and through appointment using our research consultation form.

Special Collections and the Internet Archive

The library is currently collaborating with the Internet Archive to make digital versions of our public domain materials freely available. Right now the majority of the 58 titles that have been uploaded are Special Collection’s legal dictionaries, including British and Scottish dictionaries. There are also five of our annotated Magna Carta volumes. Through the Internet Archive platform, one can download and view the dictionaries in a variety of ways, including pdf, full text, Kindle format, and epub. To see an example of one of the dictionaries, go to https://archive.org/details/dictionaryof_blac_1891_00_20160211, and to see the collection page, go to https://archive.org/details/georgetown-university-law-library?sort=titleSorter.
