News and Reports for April 2016

Building a Research Profile and Establishing a Researcher ID

The importance of managing your online identity –and especially your professional identity –is nothing new. But, more recent to the scene are tools to manage your scholarly identity. From ORCiD to Google Scholar, sites are adding tools to permit authors to "claim" their publications and to ensure that researchers are finding accurate information about them. These tools create unique identifiers for authors, thus helping to address the issue of author name ambiguity.

Benefits to using these services include:

  • Distinguishing your work from the work of others having the same name or a similar name; and
  • Bringing all of your work under one name umbrella, irrespective of any name changes or inconsistencies in the appearance of your name across publications.

In this newsletter installment, I'll discuss three options for creating a research profile: ORCiD, Google Scholar Profile, and Hein Online's author profile page.

orcid logo

ORCiD

ORCiD provides "a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. "It is the most sophisticated of the researcher identifier systems and is a global nonprofit organization supported by organizations including Georgetown. It is currently primarily used in the sciences and is increasingly mandated by grant funders and publishers in that discipline.

To register for an ORCiD ID and connect research activities to your iD:

  • Go to ORCID's Register for an ORCID iD page and complete the registration process
  • Update your ORCID record with your Georgetown affiliation and email address
  • Add publications to your record. Legal publications do not currently support the persistent identifiers that make connecting your work to your ORCiD automatic, and so it is likely that you will need to add your publications manually.
  • You can then link your ORCiD to other online profiles, such as SSRN. To do so, edit the personal information page in your SSRN account:

SSRN Profile page

More detailed information about ORCiD and how to register are available here.

Google Scholar Logo

Google Scholar Profile

Given that most people now start their research with Google, taking the time to set up a Google Scholar Profile is likely to be worth your while. It's simple, will give you information about citations to your articles, and will make your work more discoverable.

To set up a Google Scholar Profile:

  • Go to Google Scholar and click on the "My Citations" link at the top of the page. [You will need to have a basic account with Google established]
  • Fill in your basic profile information and click "Next Step"
  • Google Scholar will then present a list of publications that it believes you authored
  • "Claim" those that you did in fact author and click "Add"
  • You can also manually add articles that Google did not find
  • Decide whether you would like citations automatically added to your profile (not recommended)
  • Decide whether you would like your profile to be public (recommended)

That's it! To see what a public Google Scholar Profile looks like, see Brian Galle's.

More detailed instructions on setting up and maintaining a Google Scholar Profile can be found here.

HeinOnline Logo

Hein Online Author Profile

Hein Online's Author Profile is not particularly sophisticated, but its significant advantage over ORCiD and Google Scholar is its target audience: legal researchers. Hein has already assembled works authored by people having the same name in its database, but it has not disambiguated works by authors having the same name (see, for example, #47 under David Cole's profile). So, it is worth taking a look at your profile in Hein to ensure that your listing is accurate.

To review your Hein Online Author Profile:

  • Go to Hein Online
  • Find an article that you authored (the easiest way to do this is to use the Hein links from the listing of your scholarship on your Georgetown profile page):
    FSD
  • Click on your name
    HeinOnline entry
  • Review the information Hein assembled
  • Click on the Submit or Edit Author Profile link to request changes

More detailed instructions can be found here.

International LLMs &The Bluebook

The Bluebook presents unique frustrations to the foreign trained lawyer. They are learning new ways of researching, arguing, and writing often in a foreign language, only to face the vagaries and small caps of the American Bluebook! While some countries have citation manuals similar to the Bluebook, most jurisdictions have no formal citation guide nor even a common practice. All this adds up to a new and confusing experience for our international students.

The Wolff Library has partnered with the Language Center to bridge this knowledge gap. While the Center covers writing, paper structure, and editing, the Wolff Librarians provide instruction on research methods, materials and databases along with individual research consultations. This year, we added five Bluebook sessions where we discuss the purpose and use of the Bluebook. A drop-in lab will be offered at the end of April where students can bring their papers or sources with specific Bluebook questions.

Some of the challenges that we've noticed from our international students:

  • Small Caps. How to find them in Word and when to use them.
  • Dates. Is it the date of the statute or the code edition?
  • Confusion between Bluebook styles for scholarly papers and legal documents. Since they are writing both styles in an academic setting, students sometimes use the law review format for their legal brief assignments.

Foreign trained lawyers often write comparative papers discussing law from their home country and the United States. However, the Table 2 of the Bluebook does not provide citation guidance on many countries. What's missing? Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Venezuela, Cameroon, and many more! In these cases, we tell students to look at similar jurisdictions as a model for building their citation.

Have you noticed anything else related to the Bluebook and your international students? If so, let us know and we'll incorporate it into our instruction.
