News and Reports for August 2016

World War I Centennial – Special Collections remembers

In recognition of the centennial of World War I, the Law Center Archives has put together an exhibit of Law Center faculty and students who participated in the war effort. Through the exhibit we honor those past members from our community who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace. Special Collections also has an interesting collection of World War I propaganda pamphlets from all over the world. They are available for viewing, so please stop by Williams 210.

Wolff Display - Olympics and the Law

The Olympic spirit is alive and well at the Wolff Library.  Come see our display called Olympics and the Law which is located on the upper level.  Information on arbitration, doping, and security are presented along with resources about these topics.  The Olympics themselves are actually composed of four bodies: International Olympic Committee (IOC), international sports federations, national Olympic committees, and the organizing committee for the Olympic Games.

In recent years, the Olympic organizations have been plagued with various scandals.  Corruption and doping being at the top of the list.  Corruption charges are usually related to host city selection and involve excessive “wining and dining” of the IOC selection committee or even outright payments.  To combat performance enhancing drugs, the IOC has delegated doping controls to the World Anti-Doping Agency with athletes being governed by the World Anti-Doping Code.  You can learn more about these issues by visiting our display.

We also have an Olympic and International Sports Law research guide that provides much more detail on the structure of the games, the court of arbitration, and much more.  Feel free to check it out – it has over 580 views this month!
