The Dengrove Exhibit at Georgetown Law Library
Son of Sam Trial
Georgetown Law Library is exhibiting artwork from the collection of Courtroom Sketches of Ida Libby Dengrove. The sketches are on loan to Georgetown from the University of Virginia Law Library. Mrs. Dengrove was a sketch artist for WNBC New York beginning in the 1970s, a time when the New York crime rate had increased dramatically. She sketched some of the most memorable trials of the late twentieth century, and was awarded two Emmy Awards.
Featured in the sketches are such “celebrities” as Sid Vicious, Donnie Brasco, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, Bernard Goetz, Jean Harris, John Hinckley and the Mayflower Madam. For assistance in finding individual sketches, two tools are available. A location guide to finding where sketches are displayed in Williams and Wolff libraries. It has sketch numbers, and brief descriptions. The Writeups page at UVA Law includes not only the sketches, but some background on the defendants, and a brief summary of the trial.
The collection will be on exhibit at our library throughout the year.
