Media Relations

The Media Relations Office at Georgetown Law is part of the Law Center’s Office of Communications. We represent and promote the Law Center’s faculty, administrators, academic programs, student organizations and staff to the news media and serve as the central point of contact for members of the press seeking expert legal opinion from Georgetown Law’s community of scholars.  We stand ready to assist all members of the Georgetown Law community with media outreach efforts.  Here are some of the services that we provide:

Publicity

We draft press releases to publicize news from Georgetown Law and media advisories to inform the press about upcoming Georgetown Law events.  Our office can assist in determining whether a press release or media advisory is an appropriate tool for publicizing your event or announcement.  Please keep in mind that news releases are for the news media.  We develop press releases that have the best chance of attracting positive media coverage for Georgetown Law and media advisories for events that will draw members of the press to campus.

We will disseminate the pertinent details regarding your event or announcement to national and international print and broadcast media outlets including C-SPAN, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press and National Law Journal, as well as Georgetown Law and University press including Law Weekly and The Hoya.

To maximize publicity for your event, it is important to contact the Media Relations Office as soon as the planning begins.  If your event involves high-profile topics or guest speakers, you should notify us immediately at mediarelations@law.georgetown.edu.

Here are our policies pertaining to publicizing events:

  • The room must be able to accommodate media and the Georgetown Law backdrop.
  • Our office should be the only one to invite media to cover events at the Law Center. (You may invite members of the press to events as guests, but not to cover events.)
  • You must check with all of your event speakers to make sure they know that print press and broadcast media (including C-SPAN) will be invited. Our office will require written confirmation from event sponsors that all participants have agreed to open press coverage before we issue media advisories.
  • In the case of speakers currently in government (agencies, Capitol Hill, etc.), our office will need confirmation from the speakers' press offices that they have clearance to go on the record.
  • If a speaker later changes his or her mind about press coverage, we are unable to "uninvite" press to an event.
