Georgetown University Law Center Professor David Cole and alumna Joan Biskupic (L’93) are among those honored by the Green Bag Almanac & Reader for exemplary legal writing in 2014. Cole’s article, “Can Privacy Be Saved?,” (New York Review of Books, March 6, 2014), was a winner in the category of “news and editorial.” Biskupic won in the category of “books” for Breaking In: The Rise of Sonia Sotomayor and the Politics of Justice (Farrar, Straus & Giroux/Sarah Crichton Books, 2014).

These works were selected by the Green Bag Almanac & Reader board of advisers, a distinguished group of legal scholars, practitioners, judges and journalists. Other honorees selected include Judge Richard Posner, Chief Justice John Roberts, Linda Greenhouse, Lawrence Tribe, and Adam Liptak. The full list of winners may be viewed here.

Cole’s article addresses the legal and political questions raised by the National Security Agency’s previously secret dragnet electronic surveillance programs, and argues that the digital age compels a new legal framework if we are to preserve privacy from government surveillance.

Biskupic’s book follows the rise of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, and situates that rise in the struggle for civil rights and justice for Latinas in recent decades in the United States.

Cole, the Honorable George J. Mitchell Professor in Law and Public Policy at Georgetown Law, joined the Law Center in 1990. He teaches constitutional law, national security and criminal justice. He has devoted his career to fighting for public justice and is widely recognized as a leading legal advocate for civil liberties. Even as a professor, he continues to litigate and has been involved in many of the nation’s most important cases focused on national security and civil liberties. He has briefed or argued seven constitutional rights cases before the Supreme Court, is the author or co-author of several award-winning books, and writes regularly for the New York Review of Books and The Nation.

Joan Biskupic is an editor in charge for legal affairs at Reuters News. She has covered the Supreme Court for 25 years, has written several books on the judiciary, and regularly appears on television and radio as a commentator on the Supreme Court.
