WASHINGTON, D.C.In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of international law, Georgetown University Law Center Professor John Jackson was presented the Manley O. Hudson Medal by the American Society of International Law (ASIL) at its annual meeting in Washington on April 11.

"Professor Jackson is a most deserving recipient of ASIL's Hudson Medal – the Society's highest honor," said ASIL executive director Elizabeth Anderson. "His work in the field of international trade law has been, in the best tradition of our Society, an invaluable resource to scholars, practitioners and policymakers alike."

Established in 1956, the Manley O. Hudson Medal is awarded on an occasional basis for "pre-eminent scholarship and achievement in international law."

After serving as the Hessel E. Yntema Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, Jackson joined the Georgetown Law faculty in 1998 and became the director of the Institute of International Economic Law. He has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Delhi in India and the University of Brussels in Belgium, a consultant on legal education to the Ford Foundation, a research scholar at the headquarters of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva, Switzerland, and a Rockefeller Foundation fellow in Brussels. He served as general counsel for the Office of the President in Washington, D.C., (1973-1974) and associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan (1988-1989).

Jackson has advised the U.S. and various foreign governments and international organizations, and in 2000, served as chairperson of a WTO panel for a trade dispute settlement procedure. He was appointed by the WTO director-general in 2003 to a newly constituted consultative board. The author of numerous books, articles, and chapters, Jackson is the editor in chief and a founding editor of the Journal of International Economic Law. His most recent book is "Sovereignty, the WTO and Changing Fundamentals of International Law" (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

Jackson received the Wolfgang Friedman Memorial Award for lifelong contribution to the field of international law in 1992 and will be awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the European University Institute later this year.
