Professor Goldberg

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University Law Center Dean T. Alexander Aleinikoff is pleased to announce the appointment of Georgetown Law Professor Steven P. Goldberg to the newly established James and Catherine Denny Endowed Chair. He will be formally installed in a ceremony at the Law Center on February 26.

"Steve Goldberg is a profound scholar in the areas of science and religion and law. His teaching at the Law Center is legendary. This is a well-deserved honor," said Aleinikoff. "We are deeply grateful to James Denny, and his wife, Catherine, for their generosity in endowing this chair."

Goldberg joined the Georgetown Law faculty in 1977. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including, "Bleached Faith: The Tragic Cost When Religion Is Forced Into the Public Square" (Stanford University Press, 2008); "Seduced by Science: How American Religion Has Lost Its Way" (NYU Press, 1998); and "Culture Clash: Law and Science in America" (NYU Press, 1996), winner of the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award.

At Georgetown, Goldberg has taught a wide range of courses and seminars, including law and science, constitutional law, contracts, administrative law, federal courts, and law and religion. He has been a recipient of the Frank F. Flegal Award for Outstanding Teaching and served as associate dean for the J.D. program.

Goldberg is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School. He served as a law clerk to Chief Judge David L. Bazelon on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and to Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. Before coming to Georgetown, he was an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where he won the Meritorious Service Award.

The James and Catherine Denny Endowed Chair was established with a gift by James Denny, a member of the Georgetown Law class of 1960 and a former member of the Georgetown University board of directors, and his wife, Catherine.

James Denny practiced law in New York and Paris for several years before becoming involved in financial and general corporate management. He served as a senior corporate executive for three Fortune 500 companies and as a director on a number of prominent corporate boards. He is currently a director of GATX Corporation, a major railcar leasing company, and lead director of Gilead Sciences, Inc., a research-based biopharmaceutical company whose major product is a leading therapy for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Denny has served on the boards of several Catholic colleges and universities and as chair for a major Chicago hospital. He is currently a director of the Catholic Theological Union and the Catholic Church Extension Society, and vice-chair of the Finance Council of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Catherine Denny has been active in numerous charitable organizations. She is currently a director of the newly founded Chicago Jesuit Academy and is a former member of the board of St. Thomas University. She is a graduate of Trinity College, the University of Minnesota and the Harvard Radcliffe program in business administration.
