Chaudhry will discuss his perspectives on and participation in public interest litigation in Pakistan. He is expected to be accompanied by Aitzaz Ahsan, a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and Athar Minallah, a partner at Afridi, Shah & Minnallah, who will both answer questions about the judicial crisis and the Lawyers Movement in Pakistan.
During his tenure, Chaudhry established a separate human rights division for cases involving honor crimes, reversed a major privatization deal that had been approved by the prime minister and forced the intelligence agencies to acknowledge holding dozens of citizens in secret custody. His rulings eventually led General Pervez Musharraf to demand his resignation. When Chaudhry refused, he was removed from office through what many Pakistani lawyers and judges consider to be unconstitutional means.
This event is sponsored by the Georgetown Law Office of Transnational Programs, Office of the Dean of Students, Foreign Lawyers at Georgetown (FLAG), Supreme Court Institute, Sandra Day O'Connor Project on the State of the Judiciary and Crowell & Moring LLP.
