The AALS is a non-profit association of 166 law schools that is dedicated to improving the legal profession through legal education. It serves as legal education's principal representative to the federal government and to other national higher education organizations and educational societies. Areen will be the third Georgetown Law faculty member to serve in this important one-year post. Carmack Waterhouse Professor Mark Tushnet was president in 2003 and Professor Emma Coleman Jordan in 1992. Areen was dean of Georgetown Law for 15 years, from 1989 to 2004. Under her leadership, the Law Center added 49 new faculty members and more than tripled its financial aid endowment. Areen also led efforts to expand the campus to include a residence hall, a sport and fitness center, and a new international law building. About Georgetown Law Georgetown University Law Center is one of the world's leading law schools. It has the largest full-time faculty in the nation and is pre-eminent in several areas, including constitutional, international, tax and clinical law. Drawing on its Jesuit heritage, it has a strong tradition of public service and is dedicated to the principle that law is but a means, justice is the end. With this principle in mind, the Georgetown Law has built an environment that cultivates an exchange of ideas and the pursuit of academic excellence. It brings together an extraordinarily varied group of teachers, scholars and practitioners, as well as an outstanding student body. |
