WASHINGTON, D.C., June 28, 2005 - Georgetown University Law Center Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programs, James V. Feinerman, has received a Fulbright Distinguished Senior Lectureship Award for work in China during the 2006 spring semester.

Feinerman, an internationally acclaimed expert on Chinese and Asian law, holds the James M. Morita Chair in Asian Legal Studies at Georgetown Law. While in China he plans to lecture on U.S. and comparative corporate law and governance as well as pursue his ongoing studies of Chinese economic and international law.

"As China has become a global player not only in commerce but also in international security – with high profile issues ranging from alleged currency manipulation to transnational acquisitions of foreign corporations as well as nuclear proliferation and environmental degradation – creating a common respect for the rule of law has become critically important," Feinerman said.

At a time when China is making considerable strides in its economic development and construction of a modern legal system, Feinerman believes that drawing on the experience of the U.S. and other developed economies can make a significant contribution to the modernization of China’s corporate law and business ethics.

Feinerman will be based in Beijing, where he will be affiliated with Tsinghua University. He is particularly glad that he will be reunited with his Peking University classmate, Wang Chenguang, who now serves as dean of Tsinghua’s law faculty. In addition to giving public lectures, Feinerman will consult on the supervision of graduate students and curriculum development.

The Fulbright Program, which is administered by the U.S. State Department, seeks to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills.
