Matthew Schwartz

The American Bar Association's Law Student Division has recognized an article written by Georgetown University Law Center student Matthew Schwartz as the best law school newspaper feature article from the past academic year.

Schwartz, a third-year student at Georgetown Law, wrote a lengthy front-page article appearing in the March 22, 2005 Georgetown Law Weekly about a disagreement between a student and his academic journal over who should retain the copyright to an article he had written for the journal. The ABA's Law Student Division recognized the article in its "Feature Article" category as part of its 2005 Annual Awards, which also includes publications awards for the best “Entire Newspaper," "Magazine," "Humorous Article," and "Editorial." The Feature Article category is judged on the article's quality of writing, extensiveness of reporting, and relevance to the law school's student body.

Schwartz is no stranger to the news media, having worked as a newspaper reporter for the Sandusky Register and as an intern with general assignment reporting duties for the Detroit News' Washington, D.C. bureau prior to entering law school. In addition, while pursuing his undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Michigan, he served as editor in chief of The Michigan Review, the campus affairs journal, and appeared on "60 Minutes" to discuss the school's use of affirmative action in admissions.

Schwartz' article captures yet another award for the Law Weekly. The newspaper, entering its 39th year of publication, won the ABA Law Student Division's best newspaper award three years in a row, from 2002-04. The Law Weekly is published on Tuesdays during the academic year and has a circulation of 1,500.
