The importance of law in today’s world never has been greater. The movement of people, of goods, of armies across borders has led law across borders, as human beings strive for the order, the control on arbitrariness and the fulfilling of expectations that law can bring.

Georgetown is committed to preparing all of its students for a legal career in this increasingly globalized society. The array of course and seminar offerings at the Law Center dealing with transnational, international, and comparative law in many forms is the most comprehensive in the country. Numbering about 100 in the 2005-2006 academic year, these courses advance the development, interpretation and understanding of law.

Our curriculum is generated and sustained by an exceptional faculty. The distinguished full time transnational faculty includes world-renowned legal scholars, as well as outstanding faculty in other areas of the law who have broadened the scope of their scholarship and teaching to encompass transnational, international and comparative aspects of their fields. The full time faculty at Georgetown are joined by a wide array of Washington, D.C., practitioners – judges, general counsel, law firm partners, agency directors, and congressional staff members – who illuminate the theory and the application of law as it is made and practiced in everyday life.

Complementing and enhancing the curriculum are extensive opportunities for students to learn and practice, in clinics, on law journals, through internships and externships, and from speakers and symposia. These abundant opportunities to investigate – and even shape – the law are enhanced by students who come here from every corner of the globe. This year Georgetown enrolled students from 60 different countries spanning six continents.

April 16, 2008: The Georgetown Human Rights Action will sponsor a panel, “The Intersection of Immigration and Gang Reduction Policy,” from 1:00 – 3:30 in McDonough 203.
April 14, 2008: Georgetown University Law Professor Edith Brown Weiss was presented the International Environmental Law Award by the Center for International Environmental Law.
April 11, 2008: Georgetown University Law Professor John Jackson was presented the Manley O. Hudson Medal by the American Society of International Law.
