Georgetown Law is excited to announce a new program with National Law School of India University (NLS) in Bangalore for students interested in studying abroad in fall 2008. Up to 3 Georgetown law students will have the opportunity to participate. NLS is generally considered to be one of the three best law schools in India, probably the best. Its elite academic environment has attracted some of the best legal scholars and students from all parts of India. The NLS campus is located in Nagarbhavi, about 10 kilometers from central Bangalore. The city of Bangalore is the third largest in India and is a center of industry, learning, and culture. In addition, Bangalore is well known for its role in the information technology sector of India's economy, a fact that was highlighted in the recent best selling book by Thomas L. Friedman, The World is Flat. India itself is a fascinating country. With a population of over 1 billion people, there are many ethnic and religious groups. India's economy is nevertheless growing at a rate of over 8% per year. It also has a long history of the rule of law, derived from the English common law system.
Classes at NLS are taught in English. The academic year at NLS is divided into trimesters; Georgetown students would be taking classes during the second trimester. Also, students should be aware that classes are typically scheduled during the trimester from Monday through Saturday. Georgetown students can earn a maximum of 14 credits. (Since classes do not start until mid-October, students would have an opportunity to travel before the start of the trimester.) Available Courses and Seminars Courses and seminars each qualify for 4 Georgetown credits. Typical second trimester classes available to students include: International Trade Law Intellectual Property Law Advanced International Law (regarding institutions) Corporate Law I Students also would also have several seminar courses available to them. Generally, 6 to 8 are offered each trimester. Below is an illustrative list of seminars that have been offered in recent years: International Taxation Medical Law and Ethics Affirmative Action Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Media and the Law Violence Against Women Natural Resources and Energy Law Cyber Crimes Law and Practice Economic Crimes Anti-Dumping Law Information Technology Law Bio-technology and Patents Law Refugee and Humanitarian Law Displaced and the Law Law and Economics Science, Technology and Human Rights Negotiation Skills International Commercial Arbitration Infrastructure Contracts Telecommunication Law Fundamentals of Corporate Finance Competition Law International Criminal Tribunals Environmental Advocacy Human Rights and Police Processes Arbitration Law and Practice Illegal Citizens Minority Rights European Law International Aspects of Corporate Tax Dispute Settlement in International Trade Investment Feminist Jurisprudence Mergers and Acquisitions Law and Accountancy Housing NLS has on-campus dormitories, or hostels, available to students. Almost all NLS students stay in dormitory housing. Students are advised that dormitory rooms at NLS are generally shared (2 students per room) and are sparsely furnished.
