Gorik Ooms, Lic.Jur., Ph.D., is a human rights lawyer and a public health scholar. He graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven in 1989. During most of his professional career he worked with Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium, of which he was the executive director from August 2004 until June 2008. In March 2008, he obtained his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the University of Ghent, for a thesis on the subject “The right to health and the sustainability of healthcare: Why a new global health aid paradigm is needed.” In August 2008, he joined the Department of Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp.
During the 2009-2010 academic year, with support of a Fulbright scholarship, Gorik Ooms was appointed global justice fellow with the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, where he remains corresponding fellow. Since 2010 he is an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University, and since 2013 a visiting scholar at the Faculty of Law of the University of Antwerp.
Gorik Ooms is a member of the steering committee of the Joint Action and Learning Initiative on National and Global Responsibilities for Health, representing the Hélène De Beir Foundation, and the academic coordinator of Go4Health, a research project on the post 2015 health development goals.
