Board Director -- Charity Ryerson 3L Charity grew up in Indianapolis and studied political science at Loyola University Chicago. Between college and law school, she worked in the international labor rights movement, supporting worker organizing on Latin American plantations and factories that produce for the US market, and investigated anti-union violence cases in Colombia and Guatemala. She continues to be involved in projects with the Movement of Victims of State Crimes of Colombia. In this capacity, she visits displaced communities in rural Colombia and works closely with the Colombian victims' movement to support their work for Truth, Justice, and Integral Reparation. She has worked on law suits against US corporations for human rights violations overseas, and spent the summer of 2011 at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Costa Rica. She has also worked as a waitress, a pizza delivery driver, a bartender, an extra in a Gaelic soap opera in Ireland. She lives in Northeast DC with her husband, housemates, and two valiant cats.
Director of Communications -- Peter Atlee 3L Pete's involvement in the Boy Scouts as a teenager introduced him to community service. As part of his Eagle Scout project he directed the construction of raised gardens for a nursing home. He remains active in his community, serving for several years on non-profit boards in his neighborhood, and in law school he participated in the Refugee Assistance Program and community service events organized by the Georgetown Law Journal. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Delaware with majors in history, political science, and psychology. During the year, he works as a Law Clerk at Ward & Ward PLLC in Washington DC; he spent last summer in New York and London working for Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
Co-Director of Project Coordination -- Amy Cheung 2L A lifelong New Jerseyan and reluctant Philadelphian, Amy came to DC after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Anthropology and Hispanic Studies and working as a program manager at a nonprofit immigrant resource center. She spent her 1L summer interning at the Central American Resource Center, which offers low-cost immigration legal representation, and in her free time enjoys reading children's literature, eating, and exploring DC. Georgetown Law's history of supporting public interest work was one of the main attractions that drew Amy to the school. She has been pleased to see the extent to which students already participate in the public interest law community and is looking forward to increasing that involvement as Co-director of Project Coordination.
Co-Director of Project Coordination -- Kaitlin Niccum 2L Kaitlin is from Fayetteville, NC and attended American University, majoring in International Relations and minoring in Literature. After college, Kaitlin taught LSAT preparation for Kaplan Test Prep and eventually came to Georgetown University Law Center to explore her interests in family law and military law. At Georgetown, Kaitlin participated in the Georgetown 1L Pro Bono Service Project, spending part of her 1L year working for a judge in the DC Superior Court in Washington. Kaitlin is delighted to serve as the Director of Project Coordination and looks forward to planning, organizing, and coordinating existing and future pro bono projects. In her free time, Kaitlin enjoys scuba diving, martial arts, cooking and reading.
Co-Director of Project Development -- Amy Phillips 2L Amy Phillips plans to become a public defender. She entered law school after eight years of non-profit work, including several years teaching and advising college students planning to enter public service professions. During her time at Georgetown, she has been a Public Interest Fellow and an Innocence Project case team member and has taken leadership roles in the East of the River Youth Court, and the Suspension Representation Project. She also volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate in the DC Family Court. Amy holds a BA in Philosophy and Politics from NYU. She spent her 1L summer at the Office of the Public Defender in Alexandria, VA.
Director of Ad Hoc and Short Term Projects -- Hans Gerling-Ritters 3L Hans is from Baltimore, Maryland and is pursuing a joint JD/LLM in taxation degree. He attended the University of Virginia majoring in Psychology with a focus on Cognitive Science. During college, he won two medals at the Junior Olympics and spent several years after graduation training and competing before trying out for the 2008 Olympics. Hans spent his 1L summer in Baltimore City working for the Juvenile Drug Court, an alternative sentencing program focused on rehabilitation. As a self-admitted tax nerd, he spent the past tax season working at a low-income tax clinic in DC. Outside of the classroom, Hans enjoys sports of all types, cooking and spending time with his oversized yellow lab.
Co-Director of Project Development & SBA Liaison-- Darryl Hazelwood 3L Darryl is from Swedesboro, NJ and graduated from Boston College with a double major in Elementary Education and History. After Boston College, Darryl spent three years teaching United States History, World History and Geography at a high school right outside of Boston. He also coached basketball and football and led three service trips to New Orleans while a teacher. At Georgetown Law, Darryl has been an active member of the Student Bar Association and the Georgetown Entertainment and Media Alliance and spent his 1L summer working at Ropes and Gray in its DC office and worked on several interesting pro bono matters. Darryl is excited about his role as SBA and student group liaison and supporting these groups as they increase their community service and outreach efforts.
Director of Spring Break/Special Trips -- Teresa Taylor 3L Terri is from Kingsport, TN, and graduated from the University of Virginia with a double major in American Studies and Religious Studies. She served a two year tour with the Peace Corps teaching English in a town in southern Kyrgyzstan. After spending a year working on homelessness outreach and policy in Virginia, Terri started at Georgetown Law where she has researched domestic violence policy in Beijing, interned with the U.S. Trade Representative, taught human rights classes to DC high school students, spent a semester at an immigration appeals firm, and worked as a research assistant. She became interested in education policy while working with iCivics, Justice O'Connor's civic education project centered around video games. As a result, she spent her 2L summer as an Education Pioneers fellow with EducationCounsel, a law and policy organization in DC. Terri's enjoys yoga, NYTimes crosswords, baked goods, travel (especially to weird places), and long, lazy dinners with friends and family.
Director of Community Service Projects -- Ericka Aiken 2L Ericka was born in Orangeburg, SC. Because her father serves in the US Navy, Ericka has lived in numerous locations, including Hawaii. Ericka graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS degree in Political Science and a minor in Physics and Criminology. While at NC State, Ericka received a scholarship from the American Physical Society and an award for her research in nanotechnology. She also received the NC State Philanthropy Project of the Year Award in 2010 for her leadership efforts on a disaster relief project for Haiti. Community service is an integral part of Ericka's life. She served as community service chair for the NC State Student Government for several years. At Georgetown , Ericka serves as community service director for the Black Law Students Association and the Women of Color Collective. Ericka is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and enjoys running, swimming, shopping, cooking, and watching movies.
