An up to date list is available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html.

We understand that many Law Center students have experience traveling to areas where there are increased security risks.  Given that our students are pursuing a professional degree, they also tend to possess the maturity and good judgment that those younger or less experienced might lack.  However, students who seek to participate in Georgetown-sponsored or funded programs in Travel Warning countries should be prepared for and familiar with the risks that go along with these opportunities.

Procedures for Students Wishing to Participate in Internships in Travel Warning Countries

All students who will participate in Georgetown arranged or funded internships MUST do the following:

1.  Review the Travel Warning for the country to which you are traveling.  Travel Warnings are available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html.

2.  Once you have read the Travel Warning, submit a short statement to Cara Morris, Deputy Director, Office of Transnational Programs at woltemat@law.georgetown.edu.  We suggest that you do this as soon as you are offered the opportunity but no later than April 14, 2009.  The statement should be between 275-500 words and must include the following:

* Name and location (city and country) of the organization with which you will be interning;

* Description of your expected duties with the organization;

* Details expressing your understanding of the situation in the country;

* Description of previous experience in the region where the internship will take place or other regions where there are similar safety concerns;

* Description of your own personal preparedness;

If there are any questions or concerns, we will contact you and the International Internship coordinator directly.

Assuming there are no problems with your submission, we will send you a country-specific assumption of risk form that you will need to sign and send back to the Office of Transnational Programs.  You will also need to submit the other pre-departure materials required of all international interns.

You are also required to do the following:

* Contact the organization with which you are working to obtain information about the safety and security information that they provide to employees.

* Register with the Department of State at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/.

* Register your trip and personal travel record with ISOS (referenced above) by going to http://www1.georgetown.edu/svp/rm/services/international/36899.html and clicking “Access International SOS Here.”  Your Net Id and Password are required.

* Review and register on the Overseas Advisory Counsel's website at http://www.osac.gov/.  This will allow you to subscribe to daily news and reports.

TRAVEL WARNING POLICY

UPDATED 4/19/2007

BY THE

Executive Committee of the President

Georgetown University does not affirmatively encourage travel that contravenes Department of State Travel Warnings.  Faculty and staff who are contemplating travel for students to a location subject to a current Travel Warning must request and obtain advance permission from the University.  In evaluating such requests, the University will assess whether the proposed trip complies with the applicable Travel Warning.

Students who are planning to study on an independent basis in a location subject to a current Travel Warning must request and obtain advance permission from the University in order to receive academic credit or financial support for such study. In evaluating such requests, the University will assess the academic necessity and appropriateness of the proposed study, the individual's personal preparedness, and give great weight to the content of the relevant travel warning. Undergraduate, medical and law students should submit their requests to the Office of International Programs of their respective campuses. Main Campus graduate students should submit their requests to the Graduate School.

Undergraduate students interested in studying abroad in a country under a Department of State Travel Warning should visit the OIP Resource Center in Poulton Hall and research potential programs as soon as possible. Students will need to meet with an advisor and request an application for these types of programs in person.
