Georgetown Law offers students the opportunity to study abroad at National Law School of India University (NLS) in Bangalore. Up to 3 Georgetown law students will have the opportunity to participate. NLS is generally considered to be one of the three best law schools in India, probably the best. Its elite academic environment has attracted some of the best legal scholars and students from all parts of India. The NLS campus is located in Nagarbhavi, about 10 kilometers from central Bangalore. The city of Bangalore is the third largest in India and is a center of industry, learning, and culture. In addition, Bangalore is well known for its role in the information technology sector of India's economy, a fact that was highlighted in the recent best selling book by Thomas L. Friedman, The World is Flat. India itself is a fascinating country. With a population of over 1 billion people, there are many ethnic and religious groups. India's economy is nevertheless growing at a rate of over 8% per year. It also has a long history of the rule of law, derived from the English common law system.
Classes at NLS are taught in English. The academic year at NLS is divided into trimesters; Georgetown students would be taking classes during the second trimester. Also, students should be aware that classes are typically scheduled during the trimester from Monday through Saturday. Georgetown students can earn a maximum of 14 credits. (Since classes do not start until mid-October, students would have an opportunity to travel before the start of the trimester.) Dates Classes begin October 16, 2009. Exams will end January 16 or 17, 2010. The actual date depends on which date the festival known as Sankranti falls in 2010. The date of the festival will be set in December 2009.
