Georgetown Law offers students the opportunity to study abroad at National Law School of India University (NLS) in Bangalore. NLS is generally considered to be one of the three best law schools in India, probably the best. Its elite academic environment has attracted some of the best legal scholars and students from all parts of India. The NLS campus is located in Nagarbhavi, about 10 kilometers from central Bangalore. The city of Bangalore is the third largest in India and is a center of industry, learning, and culture. In addition, Bangalore is well known for its role in the information technology sector of India's economy, a fact that was highlighted in the recent best selling book by Thomas L. Friedman, The World is Flat. India itself is a fascinating country. With a population of over 1 billion people, there are many ethnic and religious groups. India's economy is nevertheless growing at a rate of over 8% per year. It also has a long history of the rule of law, derived from the English common law system. Classes at NLS are taught in English.
Students considering applying to study at NLS should be aware that participation provides some exciting benefits, but also involves perhaps more uncertainty than Georgetown students are accustomed to. While the Office of Transnational Programs works to provide as much information as possible to applicants in a timely manner, students should be prepared to deal with the challenges and uncertainty that accompany this program. Up to two students will be selected to participate in this program. ACADEMIC CALENDAR The 2012-2013 academic calendar is not yet available. The academic year at NLS is divided into trimesters. Georgetown Law students enroll in the October-January trimester. The 2011-2012 trimester dates are available here. Note that Georgetown's spring 2013 classes begin Tuesday, January 14, 2013 and students on exchange at NLS must be certain that they can return to Washington by that date. AVAILABLE COURSES Because of the slight overlap of the NLS trimester with the Georgetown Law spring semester, students should be prepared to enroll exclusively in 5th year seminar courses that require papers instead of exams. This allows students to complete their course requirements in advance of the start of the spring semester at Georgetown. Students should also keep in mind that there is a 75% class attendance requirement at NLS. There are generally 6-8 seminar classes offered per semester. Below is an illustrative list of seminars offered in recent years. Students are cautioned that seminar offerings can change from year to year. The list of seminars offered in the 2012-2013 October-January trimester will not be available until about one to two weeks before the start of classes. Students register once they arrive in Bangalore. Seminars qualify for 4 Georgetown credits each. FINANCIAL AID While studying abroad through this program, students are eligible to receive the following funding: Federal Stafford loans, commercial or Grad PLUS Loans, and any grant or scholarship awards for which they have qualified. The same deadlines and application procedures for renewal of aid funds should be followed as if the student were attending at the Law Center. This program, like all study abroad programs, has its own student living expense budget which will vary from the standard on-campus budget to reflect local costs and program-specific expenses. The budget may be lower than that for on-campus students. Additionally, Students should be aware that, pursuant to federal regulations, lenders may not disburse federal financial aid more than 10 calendar days prior to the actual start date of classes. For example, if classes at the foreign institution do not start until October 20, financial aid funds will post to the borrower’s student account no sooner than 10 calendar days before that October date. Please note that the regulations require the timing limitations be based on the start of classes, not orientation programs or other pre-class activities, even if required by the institution. Students should plan accordingly. See the Financial Aid section on the main semester abroad web page for additional information. HOUSING NLS has on-campus dormitories, or hostels, which have been available to students in the past. Almost all NLS students stay in dormitory housing. Students are advised that dormitory rooms at NLS are generally shared (2 students per room) and are sparsely furnished. In the prior years that Georgetown Law has offered this study abroad opportunity, NLS has been able to provide housing to our students; however, they do not guarantee housing. Housing confirmations for exchange students are usually provided between late July and mid-August. APPLICATION TIMELINE
