Public Safety Officers Honored at Georgetown Law ruler

Georgetown Law Public Safety Director Ed Piper

For the first time, Georgetown Law hosted the Consortium of Universities Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy, a seven-week training program for public safety officers.

Twenty-one officers from area institutions graduated from the program July 9 and are certified as special police officers in the District of Columbia. Officers must attend the academy within their first 12 months of service or have completed equivalent police training prior to being hired.

Georgetown Law Public Safety Director Ed Piper said what makes the program valuable is the quality of instructors and its emphasis on the Washington, D.C. criminal code. “I think you can see our relationship with the metropolitan police has never been better,” said Piper. “We’re pushing education and training harder than ever before.”

At the ceremony, Piper also promoted Georgetown Law Public Safety Officers Frank Richardson and Terence Mack to SPO3/Officer First Class. “They donated many hours of their time to help improve the department. They demonstrated strong leadership abilities over the period of the last three years,” said Piper.

As newly appointed first class officers, Richardson and Mack will be taking an active role in training and investigations.

Speakers at the graduation ceremony included Georgetown Law Interim Dean Judith Areen and Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Diane Groomes.
