July 23, 2010 Prepared by the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management Georgetown Law
Overview
The Higher Education Opportunity Act (Public Law 110-315) became law in August
2008. It requires all United States academic institutions to produce an annual fire safety
report outlining fire safety practices, standards and all fire-related on-campus statistics.
The following public disclosure report details all information required by this law as it
relates to Georgetown Law.
General Statement
At Georgetown Law- the 12-story Gewirz student residence and all campus buildings are covered with integrated fire sprinkler systems and redundant fire alarm monitoring systems which are monitored 24hours/day, seven days/week.
Fire Safety Improvements and Upgrades
The Georgetown Law Facilities Department and the District of Columbia Fire Marshal annually reviews the fire systems in all campus buildings and will make recommendations for upgrades, repairs or revisions when problems are identified.
Gewirz Student Residence
Fire drills are held once a semester. Fire drills are mandatory supervised evacuations of a building for a fire. The fire drill is scheduled with the Director of Residence Life, the local fire department, the Department of Public Safety and the individual building staff. Supervised fire drills are usually scheduled within the beginning of the semester, or at a time that is conducive to demonstrate the effectiveness of the drill.
Students who fail to leave the building during a drill are counseled and the incident is turned over to the Director of Residence Life or Dean of Students for adjudication.
Fire Life Safety Education
Gewirz is a 12-story high rise apartment building that serves as a residence to our students. Each apartment is equipped with a kitchen to allow the preparation of meals. Fire evacuation information is placed in the move in packet residents receive and the issue is revisited in the floor meetings.
Smoking Policy:
General Rules
The following rules apply to smoking:
Smoking is prohibited in all indoor locations.
Smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas. Designated exterior smoking areas must be at least 25 feet from entries, outdoor air intakes and windows.
Smoking areas must be approved by the vice president responsible for the location. Vice presidents will coordinate designated smoking areas to minimize the number of areas and to ensure reasonable access for all employees.
Signs
The University will adhere to District of Columbia laws concerning posting of signs designating no smoking and smoking areas. Adequate signs will be visible at entrances and inside of buildings and elevators to inform the public of applicable smoking regulations.
Notification
The University will adhere to the District of Columbia laws concerning the notification of employees of the University's smoking policy.
