Safety Presentations
Upon request, DPS personnel will make presentations to Law Center
staff and student groups covering either general or specific
security issues/concerns. During each Fall Semester orientation
week, the DPS routinely briefs the Gewirz Resident Fellow
staff as well as the leaders of the various student organizations.
Investigations Program
Public Safety officers are tasked with conducting in-depth
investigations of all criminal and suspicious incidents that
occur within the Department’s area of jurisdiction.
Comprehensive investigative reports, to include victim/witness
statements as appropriate, document each incident and are
reviewed by both the Shift Supervisory Sergeant and the Director.
In support of criminal investigations, the DPS has covert
in-house CCTV monitoring capability.
At the end of each calendar year, and in accordance with
Public Law 101-152, The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus
Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Georgetown
University (with a separate section setting forth Law Center
specific information) publishes an annual security report.
The report includes detailed crime statistics for the previous
three years as well as policies and procedures concerning
security programs and practices at the two campuses.
In addition to criminal and suspicious incident reporting,
DPS officers document all emergency response calls, damaged
property incidents, noted or reported safety issues/concerns
and any other significant incidents, which occur on or in
the immediate vicinity of the Law Center campus.
Community Alerts
Whenever a serious crime occurs at or near the Law Center,
information concerning the incident is disseminated immediately
to all members of the Law Center community. Notification may be
in the form of an oral briefing, posted memorandum, E-mail
(both Law Center All and Bulldog accounts), an article in
various Law Center publications (What’s Happening!,
Law Weekly, and The Gavel) or all of the aforementioned.
Parking Enforcement/Security Reminder
Programs
The DPS enforces Law Center parking policies and procedures
and will ticket and/or boot vehicles not in compliance. Officers on patrol
routinely secure office doors and doors leading to restricted
access/sensitive areas of the campus found open. Officers
prepare written security reminders as appropriate.
Transportation/Vehicle Fleet Management
Programs
Public Safety manages a fleet of five vehicles- two (23 and
13-passenger) busses, two marked police vehicles and an 12-passenger
van. The Department is responsible for the maintenance, licensing
and inspection of these vehicles and two full-time professional
(CDL licensed) drivers are on the Public Safety staff. These
vehicles are utilized to provide the following services to
the Law Center community:
- Union Station Shuttle Bus Service- The DPS offers free
daily shuttle bus service from 5 p.m.-12:30 p.m., between
the Law Center and Union Station. The shuttle bus leaves
from the McDonough Hall 2nd Street driveway approximately
every 15 minutes and picks-up and drops-off passengers at
or near the stop sign on Columbus Circle, which is near
the escalators leading to the Metro Station.
- Gewirz Shopping Shuttle Bus Service- Free bus service
is provided for students resident in the Gewirz Student
Center four days per week. Selected shopping locations and
schedules are reviewed periodically with the Office of Residence
Life. Bus schedules are posted at the beginning of the Fall,
Spring and Summer Semesters.
- DPS Vehicular Patrols- As has been previously stated,
officers who conduct periodic patrols of the campus perimeter
during evening hours utilize marked police vehicles.
- Special Event Transportation Service- Driver and vehicle
schedules permitting, the DPS accommodates special event
transportation requests received from the Child Care Center,
Office of Student Affairs, Campus Ministries, the Dean’
Office, student organizations, faculty and others at the
Law Center.
Special Event Coordination/Support
Service
In addition to staffing three regularly scheduled work shifts,
the DPS assists with the planning, coordination and staffing
of major special events at the Law Center such as Fall and
Spring registration, Gewirz move-ins and move-outs, Law Center
commencement, VIP/distinguished visitors, the EJF auction,
Home Court and other such events.
DPS Escorts
Public Safety offers 24-hour escort service for all Law Center
personnel to offices that are closed after normal business
hours and/or to any other locations on campus upon request.
Additionally, DPS officers provide escorts to cars parked
in the immediate vicinity of the campus and to the taxi stand
at the Washington Court Hotel.
Student Guard Program
The DPS employs part-time Student Guards during the Fall and
Spring semesters. These Student Guards augment DPS shift staffing
levels manning the fixed security post in the entry foyer
of the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library, two additional
fixed posts in McDonough Hall (the F Street and G Street Connection
doors) and a fixed post in the entry foyer of the Gewirz Student
Center.
GO Card ID Production
DPS can modify Go Card security access levels as appropriate,
change door opening/lock-down schedules upon request to facilitate
functions being held at the Law Center and provide specially
tailored identification cards to accommodate specific unique
requests such as Gewirz Student Center parking access for
non-Law Center employee spouses with children enrolled in the Child
Care Center.
Laptop Computer Registration
The S.T.O.P. laptop computer registration program is designed
to deter computer thefts and facilitate recovery should a
computer be lost or stolen. Computers are permanently marked
with a patented security plate bearing a unique barcode ID
number, which is entered into a national asset tracking software
program. Underneath the plate, an indelible tattoo is etched
into the computer case, which if removed, displays a stolen
property message.
Bicycle Registration
Bicycles are registered throughout the academic year. Locked
and camera monitored bicycle cages, located on the P-1 level
of the Gewirz Student Center, are available for the use of
both Gewirz resident students and Law Center non-resident
students. A separate locked bicycle cage, located on the P-1
level of McDonough Hall, is maintained for faculty and staff
use. Additionally, DPS offers bicycle security locks at wholesale
cost (large U-Lock $20, small U-Lock $15) to all members of
the Law Center community.
Lost and Found
The DPS administers an extensive Lost and Found Program. Individuals
can claim lost items at any time of the day by inquiring at
the 2nd Street security guard desk located in McDonough Hall.
If found property can be identified as belonging to a member
of the Law Center community, a found property notice is left
in their campus mailbox. Every three months, lists of items
not claimed are posted on selected bulletin boards throughout
campus and announced in the What’ Happening! for a period
of one month. Items that remain unclaimed after that time
are donated to local charities.
Training Program
All Law Center DPS officers maintain current CPR, Basis First Aid,
and Defibrillator certifications.
Newly hired officers are afforded forty (40) hours of basic
orientation training prior to being assigned to routine shift
duties. Additionally, new employees who are hired without
equivalent training (i.e. certified graduates of federal or
state police academies, MOS designated military police officers
or graduates of other recognized campus police academies)
are required to successfully complete an eight (8) week Consortium
of Universities Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy within
their twelve (12) month probationary period. In preparation
for the Consortium Academy, officers are offered forty (40)
hours of pre-Academy training in DC Criminal Code and search
and seizure.
At a minimum, officers twice yearly receive in-house refresher
training in a myriad of subject matter ranging from basic
report writing to emergency response procedures to patrolling
techniques. As work schedules permit, the Department’s
Supervisory Sergeant personnel are scheduled to attend the
Consortium of Universities three (3) week Sergeants Training
Seminar, various career enhancement courses offered through
the Georgetown University training staff’s Professional
Manager Certification Program and periodic senior training
courses offered by the International Association of Campus
Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the International
Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
