Open Book Exam: You may have and refer to any books and printouts of notes you bring into the exam room, however, you may not share materials during the examination and, unless specifically authorized by the professor in the exam instructions, you may not use electronic devices or access notes or outlines on a computer’s hard drive or the internet.

Limited Material Exam: You may have and refer to only those materials expressly authorized by the professor and identified in the exam instructions.

Closed Book Exam: You have no access to outside materials. All books, notes, outlines, coats, briefcases and other materials must be removed from the desk area and placed to the front, sides, or back of the room.

** In exams where the professor permits students to access information on their hard drives or the Internet, students are prohibited from cutting and pasting prewritten text into their exam answers.

** On or before the day preceding your exam, the Office of the Registrar will send an email to all students in the class confirming the professor's instruction about the type of access students will have to notes, outlines and other materials on their hard drives or on the Internet, if any.  Please remember that if a professor restricts your access to hard drive/internet materials for an open book exam, you will need to print out your notes, outlines, etc. prior to the exam and bring them with you to the exam room.

** You must save throughout the exam. There is no feature that automatically   saves  documents.  Laptop users will be asked to enable the AutoRecover feature.  This feature is designed to perform an emergency backup of open documents when an error occurs that causes your computer to stop responding. The AutoRecover feature is NOT a substitute for saving.

If you plan to write your exam responses in longhand, rather than on a computer, you are required to register to handwrite your exams using the form below. Once you have logged into the form select your courses. If laptops are not allowed, the course will not appear on the course selection list. The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 7. Please note that if your professor allows access to your notes on your hard drive or internet access, you will need to take your exam in the laptop room. Therefore, in such cases, you would not register to handwrite for those exams.

After an examination has commenced, any questions or other communications about this examination must be directed in the first instance to the Office of the Registrar, which will then take appropriate action. Under no circumstances may a student initiate communication with the course professor(s) about the examination (including anonymous communications) until grades are posted. Such conduct is prohibited by the Student Disciplinary Code as “unauthorized breach of anonymity in connection with a blind-graded examination.” A violation of this rule will be referred to the Ethics Counsel and will be treated as a violation of the Student Disciplinary Code. The Registrar will take care of contacting the professor and providing the response. This both protects your anonymity and enables the Registrar to ensure that exam questions are handled in a consistent manner. In addition, do not communicate with any student about the exam until the final grades have been posted (ibid).
