 Paper Extension Policies

  • For the Summer and Fall semesters faculty may grant a 30 or 60-day blanket extension to the entire class.  For the Spring semester faculty may grant a 30 or 45-day blanket extension to the entire class.
  • Please be aware that due dates for papers are as firm as the dates of exams.  Should a blanket extension not be given, professors may grant extensions for up to 60 days (45 days for the Spring Semester) to students on a case-by-case basis.
  • Students requesting individual extensions must document approval of the request either by submitting the Request for Individual Paper Extension form available at the Office of the Registrar in person to McDonough Hall 315, by faxing the form to 202-662-9235 or by having the professor e-mail approval to lawreg@law.georgetown.edu
  • It is the student's responsibility to ensure that an extension and subsequent receipt of the student's grade by the Office of the Registrar meets applicable degree clearance deadlines.
  • For extensions beyond 60 days (or 45 days in the Spring Semester): In addition to the professor's approval, an extension beyond 60 days (or 45 days in the Spring Semester) requires the approval of the Associate Dean for the JD or LLM program, as the case may be.  Extensions will only be granted where extraordinary and unforeseen circumstances exist.
  • Note to International Students:  U.S. visa restrictions dictate that extending the paper due date beyond the expected date of graduation as listed in the certificate of eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019 form) can be permitted only for compelling academic and/or medical reasons.  Any such paper extension must be approved in writing by the International Student Director in consultation with the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs in advance of the paper submission deadline.
