Summer Externships

Students may choose to do an externship in the summer for either two or three credits. Summer externships are not limited to the Washington, DC area. Students doing a summer externship are not eligible for EJF funding, whether for their externship or other internship.

Students are no longer limited to one externship but must receive prior approval from the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs for a second externship.

Externship credits are Pass/Fail, and count towards the 7 credit Pass/Fail limit.

Summer externs must satisfy all general externship requirements, except for or in addition to the following:

• Summer externs must complete at least 110 hours over the course of at least 6 weeks for 2 credits.
• Summer externs must complete at least 165 hours over the course of at least 6 weeks for 3 credits.
• Summer externs must attend an in-person mandatory orientation session before beginning their externships.
  • April 2, 2012: Online registration form is posted (see above).
  • April 30, 2012: Mandatory Orientation for students will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. McD 437. make up session is on May 16; students are required to attend one of the orientation sessions to receive credit. Goals Memo assignment is due during orientation.
  • May 16, 2012: Make-up orientation will be held on Wednesday May 16, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Hotung 1000. Goals Memo assignment is due during orientation.
  • May 23, 2012: May 23, 2012 at 5PM is last day to turn in registration form.
  • Individual Meetings: Students are responsible for setting an individual meeting with Professor Caesar after their first week of work. Please email jdexternships@law.georgetown.edu to schedule a meeting.
  • Friday, June 15, 2012: Mid-term meeting is Friday, June 15, 2012, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. H2000
  • Wednesday, July 11, 2012: Make-up mid-term meeting is Wednesday, July 11, 2012, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Location TBA.
  • July 13 and 20, 2012: Final Presentation. Students must attend one final meeting on either July 13th or July 20th, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. H1000
  • July 25, 2012: Final papers due to Registrar's Office.
  • August 10, 2012: Last day to receive work credit. Timesheets must be entered by 12PM (noon)--no exceptions.
    
• Students electing the three-credit option must either attend a mid-term and final class session OR be available for weekly phone conferences. In addition, the Externship Director must be able to communicate with all externs and their supervisors without significant difficulty throughout the course of their externship.
• The writing requirement for this course will be a series of journal submissions and reflective memos that total 12-15 pages.
• Tuition for summer externships will be waived for full-time students and part-time students transferring into the full-time program.
