Take Home Exams

Please be aware that take-home exams picked up from and submitted to the Registrar’s Office must be submitted to our office within the time limit AND during office hours.  Please click here for our exam period office hours.

Failure to submit your take-home exam within the time limit AND during office hours will result in a late take-home exam sanction.

Take home examinations must be picked up and returned to the Office of the Registrar front counter McDonough 315 during exam period office hours, unless otherwise notified by the Office of the Registrar.

First day for pick-up Tuesday, April 29

Last day to pick up for full time on 72-hour exams Saturday, May 10

Last day to pick up for full time on 48-hour exams Saturday, May 10

Last day to pick up for full time on 24-hour exams Monday, May 12

Last day to return exams Tuesday, May 13

Students are required to fill out a take home waiver form and present their student GoCard ID in order to receive a copy of their examination. Students should check that they have all of the pages of the exam before leaving the Registrar's Office. No extra time will be given to students who later discover they have an incomplete exam. The waiver form will be time stamped when the exam is picked up and returned.

Unless the professor offering the course precludes their use, students are permitted to use personal computers to complete their take-home examinations. Please note the following:

1. Save your document frequently. Save your document on both your hard drive and on a separate diskette or CD. Then, if your diskette or CD is damaged, you will have a copy of your work on the hard drive or, if your computer fails, you will have a copy of your work on the diskette or CD. Additional time will not be given because of problems with your computer or printer.

2. Print your document frequently. This way you will have at least a partial examination to submit for grading should your equipment fail. The more often you print your document the less damaging any failure will be.

3. As with all exams, once you submit your exam, you may not amend it. This means that you should number and count your pages and be certain your printer output is accurate and complete before you submit your exam for grading.

4. Students who pick up an examination and fail to submit it for grading will receive a failing grade.

5. All take-home exams must be returned within the time frame specified by the professor. Late return of an examination, however brief, is a serious violation of the Student Disciplinary Code that will be referred to the Committee on Professional Responsibility.

Please note that the Office of the Registrar will not accept take-home examinations by facsimile or by email. Students must submit their exams in person.

What do you bring when you turn in your exam?

• yourself - you need to bring in your own exam
• your work product
• your exam number receipt
• the original exam questions (You cannot turn in a complete exam without the exam questions.)

 

Remember, you cannot fax or email your exams to the Registrar’s Office. You must bring in a hard copy.

If you have a problem with your exam that requires a response from the Registrar during office hours call the main number (202) 662-9220. If you have an urgent need to speak to the Registrar after hours because of illness, injury, death in the family, or some other emergency, call (202) 528-9636.

Please be aware that upon submission of your take-home examination you will be asked to affirm that on your honor, and aware of the Student Disciplinary Code, you did not give or receive any unauthorized aid to/from any person or persons, nor did you use any unauthorized materials in completing your answers to this take-home examination.

After an examination has commenced, any questions or other communications about this examination must be directed in the first instance to the Office of the Registrar, which will then take appropriate action. Under no circumstances may a student initiate communication with the course professor(s) about the examination (including anonymous communications) until grades are posted. Such conduct is prohibited by the Student Disciplinary Code as “unauthorized breach of anonymity in connection with a blind-graded examination.” A violation of this rule will be referred to the Ethics Counsel and will be treated as a violation of the Student Disciplinary Code. The Registrar will take care of contacting the professor and providing the response. This both protects your anonymity and enables the Registrar to ensure that exam questions are handled in a consistent manner. In addition, do not communicate with any student about the exam until the final grades have been posted (ibid).
