Withdrawals and Leaves of Absence ruler

Withdrawals from Individual Courses

  • JD Students: A student may withdraw from a course only with permission of the Registrar, the Assistant Dean for Academic Administration, an Assistant Dean for the JD Program, or the Director of JD Academic Services.  Students may submit a request for a withdrawal until the start of the exam or the paper due date.  In order to withdraw from any course for which the permission of the professor was required to enroll, a student must also obtain the permission of that professor.  For rules regarding withdrawals from a clinic, please refer to Policies Related to Clinic Enrollment Policies in the Bulletin.
  • Graduate Students:  A graduate student may withdraw from any course or regular seminar at any time prior to the examination period, unless the professor has set, in writing, a different rule for withdrawal. Students may withdraw from Graduate Seminars only with the permission of the professor and the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, which will be granted only in extraordinary circumstances. A student desiring to withdraw from any course must submit a request in writing to the Registrar.  Note: Due to U.S. visa restrictions, international students who wish to withdraw from a course must first obtain approval from the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs or the International Student Director.
  • How a withdrawal is recorded on your transcript: A withdrawal is recorded on a student's transcript either as a Withdrawal (W) or an Excused Withdrawal (EW).  After the fourth week of the semester, a withdrawal will be considered excused only under exceptional circumstances.  The last day to receive an EW for the Spring 2007 Semester will be Monday, February 12.

Leaves of Absence and Withdrawal from the Law Center

  • JD Students:  Upperclass JD students in good standing may request a leave of absence from the Law Center.  Leaves of absence are rarely granted for longer than two academic semesters.  A request for a leave of absence and requests for withdrawal from the Law Center must be submitted in writing and directed to the Registrar.  For complete rules, please refer to Leaves of Absence and Withdrawal from the Law Center in the Bulletin.
  • Graduate Students:  LL.M. students in good standing, both academically and financially, may request a leave of absence for up to one academic year from the Registrar or the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. The student requesting the leave must demonstrate that the degree can be completed within the allowed period of study, counting the time on leave of absence. For complete rules, please refer to Leaves of Absence and Withdrawal Policies in the Bulletin.
