Step 1:  Computer Set-Up
  • Turn your computer on when you enter the room.
  • Be sure that your power cord is securely connected and not in an area where it can be pulled free.
  • Make sure your power indicator light shows that your computer is receiving power.

Step 2:  Complete Disk or CD Label

  • Write the requested information on the exam disk or CD label.  We ask for your name only for administrative purposes.  The exam disks and CDs will not be given to your professor.
  • Double click on the clock in the lower right-hand corner and verify the date and time settings on your computer

Step 3:  Open Exam Template and Set Autorecovery

  • Open the template that you received from the Registrar’s Office.
  • Click on FILE • SAVE AS and save the document to your hard drive.  We recommend making a folder in your My Documents folder, for this semester’s exams.  The name of the new document should be your exam number and the name of the course.  (i.e. 01234Evidence)
  • Click on TOOLS • OPTIONS then on the Save tab.  Check the box for “Always Create Back UP Copy” and set the “Save AutoRecovery info” to five minutes.  (In WordPerfect, go to TOOLS SETTINGS FILES and click on the document tab.  Check the box for “Timed Document Backup” and set it to five minutes.
  • The AutoRecovery feature does not replace saving a document.  You must still save often throughout your exam.

Step 4:  Prepare the Cover Sheet

  • Double click on the header and enter the requested information.  If you do not see the header, click on VIEW • PRINT LAYOUT.
  • Scroll down to the next page, to Question 1.  Clearly number your answers throughout the exam.  Wait for the Proctor to give a start time.
  • Remember to SAVE often throughout your exam.

Functions and Formatting

  • The Exam Template is set to be double spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font.
  • If on the cover of the exam the professor gives a character limit, a summary of word and character counts is provided under the TOOLS option.  (WordPerfect users need to go to FILE • PROPERTIES and click on the Information tab.)  In Word, you will see both character counts with spaces, and character counts without spaces.  You should follow character counts without spaces.  In WordPerfect, you are only given one set of character counts to follow.
  • Start and Stop times will be written on the board.  5 minute and 2 minute warnings will be announced.

When the stop time is called, or if you finish early

  • When the proctor calls time, you must immediately stop typing, scrolling or otherwise operating your computer.  After time is called, the proctor will instruct you to begin saving your exam.
  • Click the SAVE button, saving your exam to your hard drive.
  • Insert your CD or floppy disk into the drive.
  • If you are using a disk, click on FILE • SAVE AS and save your exam to the disk.
