Profile:

Ms. Garekwe currently runs her own law firm, Mt. Garekwe Attorneys, working to reform discriminatory laws and to empower women economically.

LAWA Experience:

Ms. Garekwe completed her graduate research in 2003 with her thesis paper, “The Economic Status of Women in Botswana as an International Human Rights Concern.” For her fellowship internship, Ms. Garekwe worked at Women’s EDGE on economic and trade issues.

Other Work Experience:

Prior to LAWA, Ms. Garekwe worked as a Legal Aid officer in Metlhaetsile Women’s Information Centre, a community based women’s rights organization, from 1993-1995. Ms. Garekwe was a partner at Lesetedi & Co for the following five years.

In 2000, she became the sole proprietor and attorney for Mt. Garekwe Attorneys. She also worked with Bostwana Supreme Court Justice Unity Dow, who encouraged her pursuit of women’s human rights. Ms. Garekwe is a founding member and current Secretary of Botswana Association for Women Lawyers (BAWL)
