Profile:

In 2006, Ms. King published her report, “Women in Prisons,” for the Female Prisons Project, which she runs. The Female Prisons Project provides free legal representation to female accused persons and convicted persons, and secured the release of over half of the female prisoners at the Central Prisons in 2004.

As of 2005 she has been working on the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee on CEDAW-related initiatives as Chair of the Legal Drafting Team. She is currently President of L.A.W.Y.E.R.S. – a women lawyers group undertaking a female prisoners watch project providing legal representation, counseling and support.

LAWA Experience:

Ms. King’s graduate research culminated in her paper entitled, “Women’s Land Ownership and Property Rights in Sierra Leone.” For her fellowship internship, Ms. King split her time working for the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy (CRLP) and for the U.S. House of Representative for Arkansas 2 nd District, Vic Snyder.

Ms. King was the third LAWA fellow to participate in the Georgetown University Leadership Seminar, held in Washington, D.C.

Other Work Experience:

Prior to LAWA, Ms. King worked for Basma and MacAulay Barristers & Solicitors as a practicing barrister and solicitor beginning in 1994. In 2000, she was a leading member of the Women’s Forum Task Force, working to stem violence in Sierra Leone.

She has been a member and officer of the International Federation of Women Lawyers in Sierra Leone (FIDA) and a longtime Member of Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice (LAWYERS).
