Profile:

Magistrate Osman is an admitted attorney of the High Court and currently serves as a Magistrate in the Family Court dealing with issues such as domestic violence, maintenance, adoptions, and the removal of children from violent homes. Magistrate Osman currently acts as the Director of Functional Services Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons, an independent statutory body which inspects prisons in order to report on the treatment of prisoners, prison conditions, and any corrupt or dishonest practice in prisons. In addition, she has presided over the Juvenile court in Cape Town.

LAWA Experience:

Magistrate Osman wrote her graduate paper, “Domestic Violence and HIV/AIDS: A Major Threat to Women in South Africa,” in 2005, in which she examined the dual nature of HIV/AIDS infection as both a medical concern and the result of systemic gendered power dynamics. She presented this paper to the U.S. House of Representative with a view to inform Congress on issues pertaining to South Africa. In addition to her Master’s degree, Magistrate Osman completed a diploma in Refugee Law and International Humanitarian Assistance during her fellowship.

Magistrate Osman completed her fellowship internship with The Futures Group, during which she developed a human rights training manual to assist U.S. Government funded agencies doing work on orphans and vulnerable children and HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Additional Experience:

Magistrate Osman completed a 2 year clerkship with a leading non-profit law firm, The Legal Resources Centre, in 1997. Following that, she worked for the Regional Land Claims Commission as a legal advisor to the regional commissioner and the Minister on land issues. At the same time, she served as a member of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers of South Africa (NADEL) from 1998-2001. She acted as a Senior trainer and researcher at the Law, Race and Gender Research Unit of the University of Cape Town from 2002-2004.
