Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law Center Mary Hartnett is a former Executive Director of the Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program and a member of the WLPPFP Advisory Board. Prior to this position, Mary served as Of Counsel to the international law firm of Coudert Brothers, advising primarily on transactions in Russia and the Newly Independent States. She has also served as a visiting professor at Riga Graduate School of Law in Latvia, where she taught International Women’s Human Rights Law. Currently, Ms. Hartnett is writing an authorized biography of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg along with co-author Wendy Williams. Ms. Hartnett has been actively involved in women's rights issues throughout her legal career as an international attorney, including representing low-income clients through her service on the Civil Pro Bono Panel for the U.S. District Court of Washington, D.C., drafting amicus briefs for the Women's Legal Defense Fund (now called the National Partnership for Women and Families), and counseling victims of domestic violence. She has a special interest in international women's rights issues, having lived in Bahrain, Norway, Russia, Ireland, Latvia, and Uzbekistan. Ms. Hartnett attended Grinnell College, where she graduated with honors in 1980. She majored in women's studies and political science, was active in the local NOW group, interned and clerked for representatives in the Iowa House of Representatives and Senate, and captained the women's tennis team. After attending NYU School of Law for her first year as a Root-Tilden scholar, she graduated from Georgetown University Law Center magna cum laude in 1985, where she was a member of the Sex Discrimination Clinic and the American Criminal Law Review.
