Profile:

Debra S. Katz has been successfully litigating employment discrimination, civil rights, and whistleblower protection cases for more than 20 years. She is a founding partner of Katz, Marshall & Banks, LLP, where she concentrates her practice on employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, Sarbanes-Oxley and other whistleblower claims, contractual employment disputes and civil rights matters. Ms. Katz has developed extensive litigation experience in federal and local courts in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and before federal and state administrative agencies.

Ms. Katz has been recognized as one of the "Best Attorneys in America" and one of the "toughest" employment lawyers in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Katz received a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, from Union College in 1980, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1984, she received a J.D. degree, cum laude, from University of Wisconsin. Ms. Katz was a member of the Wisconsin Law Review and a founder and Articles Editor of the Wisconsin Women's Law Journal. Ms. Katz clerked for the Honorable William Bablitch, Wisconsin Supreme Court, from 1984-85. From 1985-86, Ms. Katz held a Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship through Georgetown University Law Center. Ms. Katz was a founding member and name partner at Bernabei & Katz, PLLC from 1987 to 2006, when she formed Katz, Marshall & Banks, LLP.

Ms. Katz has been recognized as one of the "toughest" employment lawyers in Washington, D.C. by the Washingtonian Magazine and as an expert in the areas of sexual harassment and employment law by the New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME magazine, and other newspapers and magazines of record. In 2004, the Washingtonian magazine named Ms. Katz on its list of Best Attorneys in Washington, D.C. Ms. Katz was selected for inclusion in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of "The Best Lawyers In America", considered by many to be the definitive guide to legal excellence, based on the peer review evaluations of over 18,000 attorneys nationwide. In March 2006, Ms. Katz was selected for membership in the Lawdragon "500 Leading Trial Lawyers in America." In September 2006, Lawdragon has named Debra S. Katz of "The 3,000 Leading Lawyers in America." Ms. Katz. was identified by Super Lawyers as a leading lawyer in Washington, D.C. for 2007. In its August 2007, edition, Human Resource Executive magazine named Ms. Katz as on the nation's "Top 10 Plaintiffs' Attorneys to Fear the Most."

Based on her expertise on employment law and civil rights issues, Ms. Katz has appeared on numerous television and radio broadcasts on CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, FOX, C-SPAN, MSNBC, National Public Radio, including The Today Show, Oprah, and Good Morning America. She has also been quoted regularly by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, National Law Journal, Legal Times, Newsweek, TIME Magazine, ABA Journal, Ladies Home Journal, and in other print media. Ms. Katz is a contributing writer to Ms. Magazine.

Ms. Katz serves as a faculty member of the American Law Institute-American Bar Association and Georgetown University Law Center's Continuing Legal Education program and regularly teaches courses on employment law, sexual harassment, civil rights matters, Sarbanes-Oxley whistleblower claims and legal ethics.

Ms. Katz is an active member of the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyer's Association, and the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyer's Association.
