Backpedaling on the Life Cycle
"What if · . . . ages 20 to 40 were the Social Security years? Instead of going to older men and women, Social Security checks would be sent to young adults. This would give people in their reproductive years the economic support they need to focus on raising children. Young parents could supplement their Social Security check with part-time work, community service and continuing education so that they would gain skills and experience in preparation for full-time work. (They would also get health coverage through Medicare.)”
Study Revives Debate Over LAPD's 3-Day Workweek
"Five years after the Los Angeles Police Department adopted the [flextime] schedule for a majority of its officers, the plan is hugely popular with the rank-and-file, who credit it with boosting morale and allowing them to get more done at work. But that gift to officers may have come at a price: A new city analysis has found that police are slower responding to emergency calls and overtime costs have increased; other agencies that have tried the plan also have found that their officers are less rested and effective, especially at the end of very long shifts.”
