Episode 4: Avi’s Advice for Those Starting Out
By Ronald J. Coleman
Our fourth episode, “Artificial Intelligence and Bias”, features guest speakers Mutale Nkonde, Todd Marlin, and Avi Gesser. I asked our guests if “a student or someone more junior would like to do what you do or get into your area, what advice would you give them?” Avi said:
“I think for young lawyers, or people who are starting out, or people who are interested in this, sort of mid-career and so forth, I would say that almost everything that you learn in other areas is applicable, because to be good at AI means you’re drawing from as diverse a background as you can grab. Both in terms of people’s experiences, but also their intellectual background and their work experiences. It’s a very complicated issue and we’re all making it up as we go along. To get this right requires a lot of different people with different views coming together and figuring out where could there be problems and what are the solutions. And the solutions are going to come from all sorts of different histories and backgrounds and theories, and require a lot of creativity. And the more diversity you have, the better you’re going to be able to solve these problems.”
