Episode 4: Meet Guest Speaker Todd Marlin
By Ronald J. Coleman
Our fourth episode, “Artificial Intelligence and Bias”, features guest speakers Mutale Nkonde, Todd Marlin, and Avi Gesser. I asked our guests to “tell us a little bit about themselves, what they do and how they got there.” Todd said:
“I’m the global leader of forensic technology at Ernst & Young. I’ve been with the firm for over 10 years. I have a multidisciplinary background. And I’ll get into in a minute how I arrived there. But I have a joint background, two master’s degrees, one in cybersecurity, one in artificial intelligence, and an undergraduate in accounting. The last 25 years, I’ve been working with legal and compliance departments all about data. My goal in my career has been to be the bridge between legal compliance and technology, because each of them speak a different language. When you talk about artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data, there’s a lot of different nuances. Given that everybody speaks a different language inside of organizations, there’s a lot of opportunity for things to get missed and not well understood. So when you translate that to artificial intelligence, as you go through the entire process, lots of decisions are made indirectly and directly throughout the process. Those decisions are not well understood and they have real outcomes. So my goal is to be that bridge between all those parties, so that information is well understood. At Ernst & Young, we’re helping organizations to better understand and govern artificial intelligence, understand where it exists, how it’s created, documented, and to mitigate risks. So I bring that legal and compliance lens to it.”
