Episode 4: Meet Guest Speaker Avi Gesser
By Ronald J. Coleman
Our fourth episode, “Artificial Intelligence and Bias”, features guest speakers Mutale Nkonde, Todd Marlin, and Avi Gesser. I asked our guests to “tell us a little bit about themselves, what they do and how they got there.” Avi said:
“I’m a Partner in the data strategy and security group at the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton. I came to do AI work through our cyber work. So I was a prosecutor for the Department of Justice and a core part of the cyber group of Debevoise. And we were increasingly being asked to help on AI projects, starting with the sort of cybersecurity of the training sets and the models. That quickly then morphed into additional help on AI. So looking at transparency, governance, privacy, explainability, and then increasingly now on bias detection and helping our clients figure out ways to optimize their data through AI and reduce the reputational risk and the regulatory risk that comes with widespread adoption of machine learning and artificial intelligence for hiring, lending, insurance underwriting, things like that. So it’s become an increasingly important part of our practice at Debevoise, and also a topic of general interest for me and our team.”
