Our fourth episode, “Artificial Intelligence and Bias”, features guest speakers Mutale Nkonde, Todd Marlin, and Avi Gesser.  I asked our guests if “a student or someone more junior would like to do what you do or get into your area, what advice would you give them?”  Mutale said:

“Be curious, when I started out in my area, which is really looking at the impact of AI on protected classes, nobody was doing the work I was doing.  And I allowed my curiosity to lead me and it’s led to not just a career that I love, but a career that is lucrative, and one that’s ever changing.  I would never have guessed 10 years ago, when I was doing hackathons that I would be advising UN strategy on digitization across the world.  But I was given that because I had first mover advantage.  There’s so many things I’m not thinking about, so I invite you to read science fiction, and constantly think about the future.  And don’t be scared of thinking about the dark side and helping people make sure that that doesn’t become a reality.”
