{"id":14421,"date":"2017-08-11T10:12:03","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T14:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/?page_id=5099"},"modified":"2026-04-16T19:16:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T19:16:06","slug":"take-home-exam-procedures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/academics\/academic-resources\/registrar\/general-exam-information\/take-home-exam-procedures\/","title":{"rendered":"Take-Home Exam Procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Exam Preparation<\/h2>\n<p>On or before the day preceding a take-home exam, the Office of the Registrar will send an email to enrolled students confirming the professor\u2019s instructions regarding the exam parameters, including the length of the exam.<\/p>\n<p>Each student is assigned a unique Exam Number each semester.\u00a0 You must have your Exam Number with you for all exams, and you can obtain it from the <a href=\"https:\/\/zdapi.appointlink.com\/ZDConvert\/AutoLaunch\/2611\/37647397\/206\/Comp\/login=shib%7Cidp=https:(s)(s)shibb-idp.georgetown.edu(s)idp(s)shibboleth%7Czdapp=es\">Exam\/Paper Management System<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students are required to complete take-home exams on a desktop or laptop computer on which the Exam4 software has been installed.<\/p>\n<p>Read the Exam4 instructions and materials found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/academics\/academic-resources\/registrar\/general-exam-information\/\">\u201cGeneral Exam Information\u201d<\/a> webpage.\u00a0 You are strongly encouraged to attend an Exam Information Session.<\/p>\n<p>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exam4.com\/org\/1521\">Exam4 Software Application<\/a> to the computer on which you plan to take your exam(s) at least 48 hours before the administration of your first exam of the semester.\u00a0 The Exam4 software should be downloaded once per academic term, even if you are scheduled to take an exam in separate time periods (e.g., the October take-home exam period and the December exam period).<\/p>\n<p>Practice exams are strongly encouraged.\u00a0 Students should run the practice exam in TAKEHOME mode to confirm that Exam4 is compatible with your exam laptop.\u00a0 You can take an unlimited number of practice tests.\u00a0 Do NOT wait until the day of the exam to take your practice test.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any technical problems or questions that arise during your practice test, you can always go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exam4.com\/\">Exam4 website<\/a> and follow the links for user support.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">On Exam Day<\/h2>\n<p>It is important to note that take-home exams require three points of contact:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Exam Numbers are located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/zdapi.appointlink.com\/ZDConvert\/AutoLaunch\/2611\/37647397\/206\/Comp\/login=shib%7Cidp=https:(s)(s)shibb-idp.georgetown.edu(s)idp(s)shibboleth%7Czdapp=es\">Exam\/Paper Management System<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Exam answer files are typed and submitted via the Exam4 software installed on your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Exam questions are accessed through the Exam4 Software.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The take-home exam will officially begin (i.e., the clock will run) when the &#8220;Begin Exam&#8221; button has been selected via the Exam4 Software.<\/p>\n<p>Students must begin and submit their exams by reference to <strong>United States Eastern Time (Washington, DC time), <\/strong>which is the time zone setting for take-home exams in Exam4.\u00a0 Students can see how their particular time zone compares to Washington, DC, time using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/worldclock\/\">World Clock<\/a>.\u00a0 No timer function in Exam4 will<strong>\u00a0alert you when the exam submission time is ending.\u00a0<\/strong> Please take particular care to note when you start and need to submit your exam according to Washington, DC time.\u00a0 Students must comply with the Washington, DC submission time regardless of the time zone where they are taking their exam.<\/p>\n<p>All take-home exam answers <strong>must<\/strong> be submitted through Exam4, unless alternate instructions have been provided by the Office of the Registrar and your professor.\u00a0 Students may <strong>not<\/strong> submit answers via alternative formats such as Microsoft Word or email; nor should students send answers directly to Law Center faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Unless expressly authorized by the professor in writing, students are prohibited from copying\/cutting and pasting any pre-written text (written before starting their exam) into their take-home exam responses.\u00a0 This rule applies regardless of who authored the text.\u00a0 Please note that cutting\/copying and pasting external text into Exam 4 may change the formatting.<\/p>\n<p>If the take-home exam instructions require a certified word count, the certification must be included in the exam answer within the allotted exam time.<\/p>\n<p>If you believe there is an error, inconsistency, or omission in the exam, please state your assumptions about the issue within your discussion of that issue.\u00a0 No clarifications or corrections will be provided.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Take-Home Upload Instruction<\/h2>\n<p>Please click the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Take-home-Exam-Upload-Instructions-10.2023-LS.pdf\">Take-Home Exam Upload Instructions<\/a> and follow carefully.\u00a0 These instructions should only be used if instructed to do so by the Office of the Registrar and your professor.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">After the Exam<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Once an exam is submitted for grading, no requests to add or revise a word or character count will be accepted. Your original submission will be sent to your professor for grading.
