{"id":5796,"date":"2017-07-22T08:51:42","date_gmt":"2017-07-22T12:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/admissions-aid\/international-students\/new-students\/supporting-documents\/proof-of-english-proficiency\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T19:22:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T19:22:38","slug":"proof-of-english-proficiency","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/admissions-aid\/international-students\/new-students\/supporting-documents\/proof-of-english-proficiency\/","title":{"rendered":"Proof of J-1 English Proficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">J-1 students are required to provide one of the following documents to prove English Proficiency prior to issuance of a Form DS-2019:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a score report or certificate from one of the following English language standardized tests with a minimum overall (or for TOEFL &#8211; total) score of:\n<ul>\n<li>Cambridge English: 185<\/li>\n<li>Duolingo: 110<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IELTS: 7.0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Michigan English Test: 76<\/li>\n<li>Pearson PTE: 56<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TOEFL: 550 (paper-based) or 80 (internet-based)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an official transcript, school report or letter (signed and dated) from an educational institution where the language of instruction is English showing a minimum grade point average (GPA) equivalency of 3.00<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a verification letter (signed and dated) written by an English language instructor from an English language school or university department\/office that teaches English and assesses English proficiency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a documented interview (signed and dated) conducted in-person or by video-conferencing, or by telephone if videoconferencing is not a viable option, by Georgetown University faculty or staff in the admitting department or office<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Georgetown Law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/admissions-aid\/jd-admissions\/\">Office of J.D. Admissions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/admissions-aid\/graduate-admissions\/\">Office of Graduate Admissions<\/a> have separate English proficiency requirements.
