Scotlandville police had spent the day\u00a0rounding up black men in the area after a witness identified the deputy\u2019s\u00a0killer as black, tall, and slender. An all white jury initially found\u00a0Montgomery guilty and sentenced him to death, but the Louisiana\u00a0Supreme Court later ruled that a new trial was required because of the\u00a0possibility of racial discrimination during the trial.
