MedStar Health is pleased to sponsor a fellowship for a 2014 Georgetown University Law Center graduate with a demonstrated interest in healthcare law and nonprofit organizations. MedStar is the Baltimore-Washington region’s leading nonprofit health system, with 10 of the area’s most respected hospitals and many other diversified health services.
The fellowship is designed to foster the development of outstanding law school graduates committed to a career in health law. MedStar's goal is to offer meaningful work opportunities that expose fellows to the skills they will need to succeed as attorneys and specifically as in-house counsel.
The fellow will be responsible for providing support to staff attorneys on designated projects, including any work that would be assigned to lawyers in the department. The fellow could work on issues related to contract review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, internal investigations, litigation management, medical malpractice defense, corporate transactions, and governance. The fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in leadership-level discussions and committees regarding the myriad strategic and operational legal issues affecting the system.
The fellow will be based in the Legal Department in Arlington, Virginia, but will also have the opportunity to spend time working in Corporate Risk Management, Hospital Risk Management, the Office of Compliance and Business Integrity, the Privacy Department, and the Office of the Secretary. Some of these rotations will be based in the MedStar corporate office in Columbia, Maryland. Longer rotations and/or assignments in areas of special interest may be arranged.
In addition, the fellow will work closely with MedStar’s attorneys and a broad array of leading law firms, giving the fellow a chance to engage in career networking. Pursuant to this goal, the fellow will have an opportunity to spend at least one month working for a law firm that serves as MedStar’s outside counsel.
Fellows are chosen based on academic performance, demonstrated commitment to healthcare law, and overall excellence. We are looking for candidates with excellent verbal and written communications skills, the ability to take initiative, attention to detail, time management and organizational abilities, strong problem solving skills, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
The fellowship runs from September 1, 2014 through August 31, 2015.
Salary: The fellow will be paid an annual salary of $60,000 and will be eligible for benefits offered to full-time employees, including Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays, and Health Insurance benefits.
Application Instructions: Interested candidates should apply online via Symplicity, job posting # 31707 by April 1, 2014.
