We specialize in counseling, policy, legislation, transactional, amicus, and strategic pre-litigation matters, which you can learn more about through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/our-clinics\/intellectual-property-and-information-policy-clinic\/our-work\/\">Our Work<\/a>. iPIP Clinic matters always involves technology, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholarship.law.georgetown.edu\/facpub\/2516\/\">no technical degree or course prerequisites are required<\/a>\u2014even for our patent work.<\/p>\n<p>Through casework and seminar, student attorneys develop competence across five iPIP x Justice themes:\u00a0<b>creativity<\/b>\u00a0(copyright and Digital Millennium Copyright Act),\u00a0<b>innovation<\/b>\u00a0(patent and trademark),\u00a0<b>transparency<\/b>\u00a0(trade secrets and Freedom of Information Act),\u00a0<b>autonomy<\/b>\u00a0(right of publicity and privacy) and\u00a0<b>accessibility<\/b>\u00a0(CDA 230 and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act). Taking this thematic approach in seminar creates deeper connections between otherwise disparate doctrines, which is a recurring theme of both seminar and casework. Students also engage in collaborative problemsolving, called \u201ccase rounds,\u201d about professional responsibility Rules 1.1 and 1.6 (competency, cybersecurity, and confidentiality); Rule 1.2 (scope of representation); and Rule 2.1 (advisor). Students complement iPIP x Justice sessions and case rounds by honing transferrable skills like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/our-clinics\/intellectual-property-and-information-policy-clinic\/ipip-clinic-spotlight\/\">Wikipedia editing<\/a>, public interest and movement lawyering for iPIP practitioners, and\u00a0<i>cura personalis<\/i>, the Jesuit value of \u201ccare for the whole person.\u201d Because our work is both legal and sociotechnical, seminar materials include songs, art, and films, as well as more than a dozen writing genres beyond Supreme Court opinions.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the semester, student attorneys will achieve the following objectives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nurture the skills to think, write, and speak competently, conscientiously,<\/li>\n<li>compellingly, and creatively, both individually and collaboratively;<\/li>\n<li>Think critically about iPIP\u2019s claim to neutrality; and<\/li>\n<li>Interrogate the effects of iPIP on marginalized groups, including people identified by<\/li>\n<li>gender, indigeneity, race, sexuality, class, and disability;<\/li>\n<li>Think critically about the overlapping relationships between iPIP doctrines;<\/li>\n<li>Foster a working environment rooted in trust, humor, respect, and joy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To learn more about Casework in the Clinic, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/our-clinics\/intellectual-property-and-information-policy-clinic\/our-work\/\">Our Work<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The iPIP Clinic is a national leader in creative legal and sociotechnical advice for justice-minded artists, nonprofits, and coalitions.
