{"id":8226,"date":"2024-03-26T16:19:16","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T20:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/?page_id=485622"},"modified":"2025-06-23T17:33:19","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T17:33:19","slug":"rule-304d-agreement-and-student-volunteer-service-agreements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/experiential-learning\/externships\/for-j-d-students\/student-extern-manual\/rule-304d-agreement-and-student-volunteer-service-agreements\/","title":{"rendered":"Rule 304(d) Agreement and Student Volunteer Service Agreements"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Rule 304(d) Agreement<\/h2>\n<p>For field placement programs, including externship programs, the ABA requires:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a written understanding among the student, faculty member, and a person in authority at the field placement that describes \u2026 the substantial lawyering experience and opportunities for performance, feedback, and self-evaluation [the student extern will receive]; and \u2026 the respective roles of faculty and any site supervisor in supervising the student and in assuring the educational quality of the experience for the student[.] <strong>ABA Standard 304(d)(2)(i)(2024-25)<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Accordingly, the J.D. Externship Program requires every student to submit a fully executed <strong>Rule 304(d) Agreement<\/strong> (i.e., all required signatures included) via their seminar\u2019s Canvas page to receive credit for their participation in the J.D. Externship Program. The Rule 304(d) Agreement is linked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/experiential-learning\/externships\/for-j-d-students\/\">J.D. Externships website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Rule 304(d) Agreement should be completed electronically and <strong>must<\/strong> be signed by the primary person who will serve as your field supervisor during the externship.<\/p>\n<h2>DOJ OARM-21, JAG Corps Agreement<\/h2>\n<p>If you are planning to extern for credit through the J.D. Externship Program at the Department of Justice (DOJ), the DOJ likely will ask you to complete its own forms. Please reach out to the Office of Experiential Education at <a href=\"mailto:lawexp@georgetown.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"cx_external_link\"><span class=\"cx_external_hyperlink\">lawexp@georgetown.edu<\/span><span class=\"visually_hide\">(This link opens in a new tab)<\/span><span class=\"cx_external_icon\"><\/span><\/a> as soon as you receive the <strong>DOJ Law Student Volunteer Intern\/Extern Agreement<\/strong> <strong>(also referred to as an OARM-21 form)<\/strong> for more information about that form process and how it intersects with the Rule 304(d) Agreement requirement. Please do the same if you plan to extern with the Navy JAG Corps and have received a <strong>U.S. Navy JAG Corps Internship\/Externship Agreement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Please allow 1-2 business days for processing of these agreements <em><strong>after your externship application has been reviewed and approved<\/strong><\/em> by the Office of Experiential Education.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other Student Volunteer Service Agreements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS) generally signs any other Student Volunteer Service Agreements.
