What elements of the system have made it so enduring, and so resistant to structural change? In his important new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/institutional-genes\/DFA81FF6743415B9BE95117D7E65CD60#fndtn-information\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institutional Genes: Origins of China&#8217;s Institutions and Totalitarianism<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Professor Chenggang Xu introduces the concept of \u201cinstitutional genes,\u201d and shows how the core elements of the Soviet system merged with those of the Chinese imperial system, creating a durable totalitarian regime with Chinese characteristics.
