Professor Nelson is Director of Legal Services at Whitman-Walker Health, a community health center serving greater Washington’s diverse urban community, including individuals who face barriers to accessing care, and with a special expertise in LGBT and HIV care. Professor Nelson specializes in transgender legal issues and founded WWH’s name and gender clinic in 2012 which to date has served more than 600 individuals. She also handles cases of health care and health insurance discrimination, and public benefit matters, including Social Security disability law, ADAP, Medicare, and Medicaid. She graduated from The George Washington University School of Law with honors in 2001. Immediately after law school, Professor Nelson joined a large law firm doing international transactional work, but dedicated as much time as possible to pro bono work primarily focused on poverty law. Professor Nelson served on the Board of Directors of Miriam's House, a residence for HIV-positive, homeless women, and oversaw its successful transition into the N Street Village family of programs in 2011. Like most Texans, she is proud to be a native, but is even prouder to call DC home for more than 18 years and to recognize DC’s national leadership in health care reform and LGBT inclusivity. In 2014, Professor Nelson was recognized as a “Shero of the Movement” by the DC Mayor's Office of GLBT Affairs and honored with Capital TransPride’s Engendered Spirit award. She received her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and graduated from The George Washington University School of Law with honors in 2001. Professor Nelson is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York Bars.
