Professor Abell has been a partner at Furey, Doolan & Abell since 1975. He specializes in estate planning and non-profit organizations. Prior to that, he was executive assistant to the Maryland Lieutenant Governor and Governor, as well as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Employment and Social Services. He has served on the boards of several foundations, especially focusing on homelessness. He has also been active in a number of religious and social justice organizations, including the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown. Professor Abell has been an adjunct professor at GULC since 1985, teaching Judicial Philosophy of the Supreme Court Seminar, Professional Responsibility, the Estate Planning Seminar, and The Practicing Lawyer and the Poor.
