{"id":382,"date":"2020-11-20T09:47:07","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T14:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/gender-journal\/?page_id=382"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:10:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:10:41","slug":"voting-while-trans-how-to-combat-voter-id-laws-and-disenfranchisement-of-the-transgender-community","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/gender-journal\/online\/volume-xxii-online\/voting-while-trans-how-to-combat-voter-id-laws-and-disenfranchisement-of-the-transgender-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Voting While Trans: How to Combat Voter ID Laws and Disenfranchisement of the Transgender Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In early 2020, a transgender woman filed a suit against North Carolina election officials after poll workers questioned her identity when she attempted to cast her ballot.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The woman alleged that while North Carolina\u2019s controversial voter identification law was placed on hold due to pending litigation, the election official asked to see her ID \u201cbecause [her] face doesn\u2019t match [her] name.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> After a lengthy altercation, the woman was ultimately allowed to vote, but not before being publicly humiliated at the polling station.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.
