Today, the multi-billion-dollar commercial sex industry encompasses a\u00a0 wide range of sexual services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">some legal and others not<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">including pornography, stripping, phone and internet sex, and sexual services obtained in brothels, massage parlors, through escort services, or on the street. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Until the nineteenth century, prostitution was generally legal in the United\u00a0 States and flourished in large cities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the late nineteenth century, groups concerned with social morality<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">especially religious groups and women\u2019s societies\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">crusaded against prostitution, leading some states to regulate and eventually ban prostitution.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1910, Congress passed the Mann Act, which outlawed the transportation of individuals across state lines for the purpose of prostitution, and also ordered the deportation of undocumented immigrant sex workers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After various attempts to regulate prostitution, the federal government enacted the\u00a0 Standard Vice Repression Act in 1919, which prohibited the buying and selling of sexual acts.<\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/gender-journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/06\/Sex-Work.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"bottom\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"off\">Sex Work<\/a>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sex work1 has a long and lucrative history in the United States and around the world.
