On February 6, 2017, HRI, OPICS, and the Office of Graduate Career and Professional Development hosted a discussion with Dr. Marie-Joseph Ayissi – a Human Rights Officer with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Visiting Scholar at Georgetown Law – about careers and internships with the United Nations.
Transforming Justice in Latin America
On November 10, HRI and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security co-hosted a discussion with Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz, the former Attorney General of Guatemala and Visiting Scholar at Georgetown, for the release of her book “Transforming Justice in Latin America: Strategies and Challenges Investigating Violent Deaths 2011-2014.” A panel discussion followed the book launch.
Global Migration Governance after the New York Summits
On October 18, 2016, Professor François Crépeau presented the annual lecture for the Robert F. Drinan, S.J., Chair in Human Rights, entitled “Global Migration Governance after the New York Summits: Towards a Generational Agenda?”
Continued Statelessness in the Dominican Republic
On September 23, 2016, HRI hosted a screening of the film “Our Lives in Transit” and a panel discussion on statelessness in the Dominican Republic, in partnership with the Americas Network on Nationality and Statelessness and Minority Rights Group International. The discussion included the presentation of a legal update to the 2014 HRI report “Left Behind: How Statelessness in the Dominican Republic Limits Children’s Access to Education”.
The Ten-Year Anniversary of the Yean and Bosico Case
On November 17, 2015, HRI, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, and the Berkeley Law International Human Rights Law Clinic hosted a panel discussion on “The Ten-Year Anniversary of the Yean and Bosico Case and Continued Statelessness in the Dominican Republic.”
On November 9, 2015, HRI and Fair Trials International hosted a discussion about the misuse of INTERPOL “Red Notices” by a number of governments to persecute dissidents and refugees abroad. The event highlighted the personal stories of victims and possible solutions proposed by legal experts fighting this abuse.
Disability Rights International
On September 30, 2015, HRI hosted the Washington premiere of the PBS Visionaries documentary “Disability Rights International: No One Left Behind.” The documentary, featuring acclaimed actor Sam Waterson, describes how DRI founder Eric Rosenthal (L’92) contributed to the creation of a new field of human rights.
